Equine Tip of the Day - Hoof Care
There is an old saying, that “no foot, no horse”, and undoubtedly, it
is as true today as ever. Keeping the feet on your horse trimmed or properly shod
is one of the most essential ingredients for keeping your animal sound and in
good health. Whether your horse is active jumping fences, roping calves or simply
pleasure riding on the weekends, good foot care is extremely important.
Focus on EQUINE PROTOZOAL MYELOENCEPHALITIS (EPM)
This extremely serious debilitating disease is oft described as a master of disguise.
It can be difficult to diagnose simply because its signs often mimic other health
problems in the horse, and these signs can range from being mild to severe. EPM
is an infection of the central nervous system of horses. The neurologic signs
that it causes are most commonly asymmetric incoordination (ataxia), weakness
and spasticity, although they may mimic almost any neurologic condition. More
than 50 percent of all horses in the U.S. may have been exposed to the organism
that causes this disease. The causative organism is a protozoal parasite named
Sarcocystis neurona. Interestingly, the disease is not transmitted from horse
to horse. Rather, the protozoa are spread by the definitive host, the opossum.
The onset of the disease may be slow or sudden. If left undiagnosed and untreated,
EPM can cause devastating and lasting neurological damage.
